What To Wear: When Gardening

Since the end of the semester I have been reading Esquire Fashions for Men, a book written in 1966 about "modern" men's fashion. The book is kind of out of date in a couple of areas, but it provides an interesting lens to view the 1960's through. A lot less hippies, a lot more suits... But, one of the most interesting sections so far is about what you need to wear e when doing a sport or athletic activity. I found the chapter pretty laughable. Really, who plans there "sports car driving" outfit? But then I got to thinking. We really do plan our outfits for everything. In fact, almost any activity we do has a sub-category of clothing that is applicable for it. Golf polos, wet suits, orange hunting vests, whatever activity you fancy, there is attire specifically designed for it.

Personally, I fancy myself a gardener. Okay, well not all that seriously. But, I like to do it and I work at a cool community garden in my town. So, what is the appropriate gardening attire. Broken in jeans, a flannel, and work boots? I would say so. But, obviously my view is up for interpretation. The key is to be casual, but to realize that you are working. In New York you will see a lot of bros rocking flannels and work boots. But lets be honest, they are not going to do any yard work anytime soon. So, when dressing to actually garden keep practicality, and dirt, in mind. Get something functional, but not something sloppy.

Always look put together.

Birthday

Well I turned the big 2-0 today and it feels a little weird. I don't feel any older. I don't feel like it is a special day in all. In fact the only reason I know that it is my birthday is because of the amount of Facebook posts I have gotten. I am not a huge Facebook fan, I think it really de-personalizes life. So today, it's cool to say happy birthday in person. Especially to your your close friends. I was reading an article in GQ about man-dates yesterday and they had a pretty good line about growing up and growing apart and cherishing the times you spend with friends. So remember your friends birthdays and don't be a douche, say happy birthday in person.

Stay Classy.

The Challenge

My intention in maintaing Alternate Plumage is to catalogue manifestations of "style" that I observe in my daily life. I am putting style in quotations because what I consider style may or may not be what you consider style. Honestly though, that doesn't really matter. What I don't want to do with Alternate Plumage is to push one type of look or trend. I just want to write about what I think is dope with the hope that somebody out there enjoys reading about it. I guess the "challenge" is to see how long I can keep this up. The only thing I have ever been incredibly committed to in life is procrastinating. For example, while I write this post I should be studying for my Ethics final. But, nearing my 20's I have realized that if I don't become serious about something in my life that I probably won't ever become serious about anything. So, I am going to give this a shot and see what happens.

Today what I find stylish is change. Yeah I know, it is a pretty abstract thing to find stylish, but it's a pretty important part of life. Also, all the cool kids are doing it so why not write about it. To be honest, I live a pretty unhealthy lifestyle. Lots of fast food, not too much working out, and very little concern for how I look. Over the next six months I am hoping to change all of that. For the first time in my life I will be living alone, with total control over what I eat, when I work out, and how I present myself. My life is changing and I need to adapt. So, what I find stylish today and what I hope to find stylish for the next 6 months is change.

Eat Well. Exercise Well. Feel Well. Change.

Peace and Much Love To Ya
